Anglers on the River Tees have been praised for their efforts to boost salmon stocks.

The Environment Agency encourages fishermen to return their catches to the water to protect populations for the future.

It said 64% of Tees salmon anglers returned their catch in 2011, above the average of 62% for the North East.

The agency said fish stocks in the river are recovering after decades of poor water quality.

Environment Agency fisheries officer Paul Frear said: "For every salmon returned that goes on to spawn successfully, we can expect up to 50 adult fish back."
